Worm Buckets in the Sanford NC Peace & Unity Community Garden!

Thank you to our awesome donor who donated 10 buckets for us to make worm casting buckets for the local community garden! We went today and put in 3 of the 10 buckets into three of the garden beds. After we received the buckets, we cleaned them up, drilled holes all over the sides of the bucket and air holes right up under the lips near the top of the buckets. After that we hand drew out logo and name on the lids. Lastly, we went and gave them to the garden mothers that work in the garden and the CiP president installed three of the buckets today to get these buckets started.

What these buckets do is allow the local worms in the area to enter the buckets through the holes, eat scrapes that are put into the buckets, and poop to their hearts content. When the casting is ready to be collected to be distributed throughout the garden, we simply cut off the scrape supply and the worms will leave the bucket and go back into the surrounding soil in the bed. In the summer when the weather is hot the worms can also leave the buckets and retreat to deeper, cooler soil. After seeing the success of other gardeners using this specific method, we decided that this would be a community care project worth the shot! We're looking forward to that poopy gold! (Ha)
